The Catch | Yilan

Film: The Catch《捕鰻的人》

About the Film

The Catch follows the Kuroshio Current that carries elvers from the Philippines to Taiwan each winter, drawing eel catchers from across the country to the mouth of the Lanyang River in Yilan for a perilous and gruelling season of work.

Filmed at close quarters, it records the daily reality of catchers risking their lives against heavy surf, and the intimidation and threats from local gangs they still face once ashore. Through the tents they pitch, the makeshift huts they shelter in and the life they share, the film draws a moving portrait of strangers building genuine bonds in a hostile environment, and reflects the resilience and warmth of Taiwan’s coastal labourers.
