Taiwan, Freedom in Practice

A workshop with Jens Galschiøt and artists from Taiwan

From September 2 to 12, 2026, artists and human rights advocates from Taiwan will gather at Gallery Galschiøt in Denmark for eleven days of collaborative work and exchange, culminating in a presentation of the works on September 10.

Continuing the long exchange between Taiwan and Denmark in art and human rights, this year’s workshop takes “Taiwan, Freedom in Practice” as its theme. The Danish artist Jens Galschiøt will work alongside Monique Wu, Hsieh Sheng-Hung, Minnie Lee, Ivan Choi and JULIA. Drawing on their own lives and practices — sculpture, theatre, drama therapy, music, illustration, animation, social research and civic advocacy — they will look again at the Taiwan they live in.

Freedom does not live only in the grand language of politics. It happens in how we tell our own stories, how we remember history, how we choose our identities, and how we live alongside people unlike ourselves. This work begins from the ordinary cultural life of Taiwan and responds to questions of democracy, human rights, identity, memory and public participation, exploring how art becomes a medium for dialogue, resistance and mutual understanding.

Where different cultures and ways of making meet, we hope audiences will see that Taiwan is not only a place on a map. It is a place that keeps practising freedom, defending plurality, and daring to imagine its future.
