Freedom of the Artist | South East Bay Taiwanese Church

Film: Freedom of the Artist《自由畫師》

About the Film

Freedom of the Artist records nearly two decades of work by an artist who suffered persecution during the White Terror, and through his life story shows both what that period did to individuals and what Taiwanese society looked like under martial law.

Rather than centring historical events and political argument as documentaries often do, the film draws heavily on the painter’s own home video, intercut with his expressionist human rights paintings, tracing in fine detail how political oppression distorts human nature and a person’s inner world — a visual narrative with both artistic and historical depth.

By weaving the paintings together with lived experience, Freedom of the Artist not only gives the work a vivid historical grounding but turns the collective memory of the White Terror into a searching reflection on freedom, human rights and the power of art.
