Breaking The Wall | East Bay Taiwanese Church

Film: Breaking The Wall《風吹》

About the Film

Directed by Lee Hui-jen and filmed over seven years, Breaking The Wall takes as its subject Peter Huang (黃文雄), a central figure in the Taiwan independence movement, and looks back across half a century of his life and his path through the democracy movement. Beginning with Huang in his later years, the film re-examines the choices he made within the current of history, and the convictions about freedom, Taiwanese identity and democratic values that never left him.

Through rare archival footage, interviews and years of close filming, Breaking The Wall presents not only Huang’s life but the course of Taiwan’s democratization, and how a generation of political activists held to their beliefs between ideals and reality. As his body and memory age, his commitment to freedom and justice comes through more clearly still, inviting viewers to reconsider what history, memory and generational inheritance mean.
