Film: From New Guinea to Taipei《從新幾內亞到台北》
About the Film
From New Guinea to Taipei: My Amis Family in Dulan, directed by Tsai Cheng-liang, centres on the director’s own Amis family and records the lives of three generations in the Dulan community in Taitung. It begins with his grandfather, conscripted during the Second World War to fight in New Guinea, and follows the family back to that battlefield in search of their own memory, and to reconsider the deep ties between war, ethnicity and land.
Through a journey of homecoming and transnational root-seeking, the film threads together Amis cultural identity, the trauma of war and the land issues indigenous peoples face today, tracing a path that runs from New Guinea to Taipei and back to Dulan. It is not only a family documentary but a searching exploration of historical memory, identity and cultural inheritance.
