The Pillar of Shame, created by Danish sculptor Jens Galschiøt to mourn those killed and injured on June 4th, stood on the University of Hong Kong campus for 23 years until the university had it dismantled and removed overnight on December 22, 2021, citing the National Security Law. The New School for Democracy Association launched a crowdfunding campaign and, with the authorization of the original artist, rebuilt the Pillar of Shame in Taiwan — a democratic Taiwan taking up the work of guarding the memory of June 4th: they tear it down, we build it up. The reconstruction was unveiled at the June 4th 33rd anniversary memorial vigil in 2022.
