The June 4th incident of 1989 laid bare the nature of totalitarian rule. For 37 years the Chinese Communist Party has continued to persecute dissidents through Hong Kong’s National Security Law, the re-education camps in Xinjiang, and transnational repression abroad. Beyond that, this authoritarian force is expanding globally, and Taiwan stands on the front line of the threat.
At this critical moment, we choose to remember, to resist, and to be free. This June 4th, the New School for Democracy Association links memory to action through a photography exhibition, a democracy market and a memorial vigil, calling on society to face what transnational repression means for democracy and freedom.
We warmly invite members of the press to join us in guarding memory and resisting forgetting, and in continuing to attend to the threat that authoritarian expansion and transnational repression pose to Taiwan and to democratic societies internationally.
