“Memory Knows No Borders, Resistance Knows No Bounds” — June 4th 37th Anniversary Memorial Vigil
The June 4th incident of 1989 laid bare the nature of totalitarian rule. For 37 years the Chinese Communist Party has continued to persecute dissidents through Hong Kong’s National Security Law, the re-education camps in Xinjiang, and transnational repression abroad. Beyond that, this authoritarian force is expanding globally, and Taiwan stands on the front line of the threat.
At this critical moment, we choose to remember, to resist, and to be free. This June 4th we link memory to action through a democracy market, a memorial pavilion and a memorial vigil, calling on society to face what transnational repression means for democracy and freedom.
This year’s 37th anniversary vigil takes “Memory Knows No Borders, Resistance Knows No Bounds” as its theme, bringing together June 4th survivors, younger Chinese exiles, international NGOs, exile communities, and Taiwanese civil society groups and advocates to respond to the memory of June 4th and to authoritarian expansion today — from historical witness, the experience of exile, international advocacy and local action.
We warmly invite you to join us in mourning those killed on June 4th, in standing with those who hold on to freedom under oppression, and in defending human rights and dignity.
