Some memories do not truly disappear, even when they are suppressed.

June 4th, 1989 changed how an entire generation understood freedom and state violence. More than three decades on, with China continuing to seal off that history and the public spaces for commemoration in Hong Kong steadily disappearing, we still hope to use images to keep the faces and the places that must not be forgotten.

Back to the Square: Us After June 4th brings together work by exiled Hong Kong artists, activists and documentarians, using photography, historical images and on-the-ground records to look again at how the memory of June 4th carries into Hong Kong and Taiwan today, and into the lives of those in exile.

The exhibition is not only a look back at history. It also asks:

When a place begins to lose the freedom to speak and to commemorate, how can we still preserve memory?
And those who have left their homes — how do they go on recording and resisting from within exile and oppression?

To go back to the square is not only to return to Beijing in 1989.
It is to return to the heart of everyone still willing to remember and still willing to speak.
