Second Session: China’s Predicament Three Generations On
Led by 1989 student leader Wuer Kaixi. Starting from how Taiwan and China have diverged in the 34 years since June 4th, the session discussed China’s present situation through the lens of three generations, examining the connections and divergences between China and Taiwan since June 4th, the internal contradictions China now has to face, and the constraints created by a shifting global order. It considered the China problem confronting countries across Asia, and how a democratic Taiwan should position itself and defend its freedoms.
Speakers
- Wuer Kaixi (lead speaker): One of the student leaders of the 1989 democracy movement and among the 21 leaders and key figures of the Beijing Students’ Autonomous Federation placed on the Beijing Public Security Bureau’s wanted list in June 1989. He went into exile and settled in Taichung in 1996, and is Secretary-General of the Legislative Yuan’s human rights committee. The author of Surrendering for Freedom: Wuer Kaixi’s Notes from Exile, he continues to speak out for human rights in China.
