Film: The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful《血觀音》
About the Film
Written and directed by Yang Ya-che and starring Kara Wai, Wu Ke-xi and Vicky Chen, The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful is a crime thriller that folds together politics, power and family. It centres on three generations of women in the Tang family in southern Taiwan. Madame Tang moves adroitly among political and business elites, and when a family is found murdered, the Tangs are drawn into an enormous struggle over money and political influence. To protect what each holds dear, the three women scheme against one another and move steadily towards a fate none can undo.
Through layer upon layer of suspense, the film traces the entanglement of human nature, greed, power and kinship, and reflects the political ecology and class structure of Taiwanese society. It won Best Narrative Feature at the 54th Golden Horse Awards in 2017, with Kara Wai named Best Leading Actress and Vicky Chen Best Supporting Actress, making it one of the most representative Taiwanese films of recent years.
