🎬 This year, the Taiwan International Democratic Film Festival will hold two film screenings at Het Nutshuis in The Hague, Netherlands 🇳🇱, including “Detention” and “She’s in Jail.” These films respectively reflect on Taiwan’s White Terror era and the resistance fate of Chow Hang Tung. The chairman of the New School for Democracy from Taiwan will also attend the event on that day, meeting with everyone for discussions. It’s a rare opportunity, so don’t miss it if you’re in the Netherlands!
《Detention》
In 1962 Taiwan, a group of students joined an underground book club hosted by their counsellor. One day, the counsellor vanishes into thin air, and the student’s search for him takes them to a realm dominated by ghosts and spirits.
《She’s in Jail》
A barrister and a woman human rights defender, Chow Hang Tung represented other activists and protesters in both mainland China and Hong Kong. Chow was also the organiser of the annual candlelight vigil for Tiananmen Massacre. Chow ended up being jailed herself. She was charged with inciting subversion, facing potentially 10 years of imprisonment. Filming an arrested human rights lawyer Chow Hang Tung under Hong Kong’s National Security Law, this documentary partly portrays a sharp decline in the rule of law in society. It also delves into Chow’s unwavering belief that fundamentally, the law should protect citizens.
《Detention
《She’s in Jail
