In Search of My Sister
Rushan Abbas founded the Campaign for Uyghurs in 2017 to advocate for Uyghur human rights. Six days after she criticised the Chinese Communist Party publicly for the arbitrary detention of Uyghurs’ relatives, her sister Gulshan Abbas, a retired doctor living in Ürümqi, disappeared — almost certainly into detention. Rushan set out to save her sister. Like so many Uyghurs who have lost family, she grieves for the detained and refuses to yield to that cruelty. The journey is hard, and anyone who loves freedom will feel it; she hopes more people will care and will speak out, so that the millions held in detention may take heart and not lose hope.
