【Ten-Year Partnership Enters Its Second Year|“IMAGINATION TAIWAN” Team Arrives in Denmark】
Artists and human rights advocates from Taiwan, together with the New School for Democracy Association, have arrived in Odense, Denmark, to begin the “IMAGINATION TAIWAN” workshop with Danish artist Jens Galschiøt.
In 2025, the New School for Democracy Association and Jens Galschiøt signed a ten-year Memorandum of Cooperation covering the period from 2025 to 2035. Through this long-term partnership, both sides aim to build a lasting platform for artistic exchange between Taiwan and the Nordic region, organize regular artists’ workshops, and deepen international dialogue on freedom, democracy, and human rights through art.
During the first year of the partnership, Galschiøt unveiled “White Terror,” a new sculpture inspired by Taiwan’s history of political repression. The work reflects on the historical trauma caused by martial law and authoritarian rule between 1949 and 1987, introducing Danish audiences to Taiwan’s difficult journey from dictatorship to democracy.
This year marks the second year of the ten-year partnership. From September 2 to 12, Jens Galschiøt will work alongside Monique Wu, Hsieh Sheng-Hung, Minnie Lee, Ivan Choi, and JULIA under the theme “Taiwan, Freedom in Practice.”
Drawing from their personal experiences and creative practices, the participants will use sculpture, theatre, drama therapy, music, illustration, animation, social research, and civic advocacy to explore how art can respond to democracy, human rights, identity, historical memory, and public participation.
On September 10, the team will present the results of their collaborative work at Gallery Galschiøt. The programme will also include a Taiwanese food-sharing event, creating an informal space where culture, art, and human rights advocacy can meet and inspire dialogue.
From remembering the historical trauma of the White Terror to examining how freedom is practised in contemporary Taiwan, this project is more than a short-term workshop. It represents the continuation of a ten-year commitment. Through art, we hope to bring Taiwan’s stories across linguistic and national boundaries and build lasting connections with the world.
