709 Companion (2020)
Eight years after the “709 Crackdown”, we follow up with Chinese human rights lawyers, their wives children and friends both in China and overseas. At the end of 2019, the authorities arrested human rights lawyers and members of the “New Citizens Movement” who participated in large scale gatherings across China. The families of human rights lawyers were forced to leave China and faced various difficulties in other places. The human rights lawyers and their families who are still in China support, show solidarity and encourage each other. Outside of China, groups such as the Chinese Human Rights Lawyers Concern Group, Professor Tomoko AKO from the University of Tokyo, and the Taiwan Support China Human Rights Lawyers Network, continue to pay attention to and support human rights lawyers across Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan. What can people who care about human rights issues in China take from the Anti-Extradition Bill movement that broke out in Hong Kong in 2019?
In the documentary, we see Chinese human rights lawyers experience sudden separation from their partners, attempts to continue adherence to ideals and the spirit of the law, the strangeness of finding themselves in a foreign land, and the importance of international attention to their situations.
