《自由畫師》記錄一位同時也是白色恐怖受害者的畫家，近二十年的創作歷程，讓戒嚴時期的政治壓迫對個人與社會造成的影響，有了更清楚的樣貌。
本片不倚賴繁複的檔案史料，也不落入空泛的政治控訴，而是把畫家大量的家庭錄影，與他表現主義風格的人權畫作交錯剪接。這樣的交錯直接呈現出政治壓迫如何扭曲一個人的內在風景——既是全片的美學形式，也是這部紀錄片最鮮明的特徵。影片為畫家的許多作品補上了具體的歷史脈絡，也提供了一種視角：白色恐怖的歷史，如何透過個人經驗與藝術表達被轉化。
