The Asian economic boom has shaken up the traditional social order, ushering female autonomy into a new era. However, in many countries where political and religious conflicts are ongoing, the old discriminatory practices and harmful behaviors towards women persist. This film features interviews with female poets across Asia, including Taiwan, India, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, using their shared experiences, personal insights, and poems to reflect on the struggles they have faced in their respective countries. In addition to revealing historical injustices, oppression, and hostility towards women, it also highlights the emergence of a new female-driven Asian literary movement.

Deepest Uprising

78 min

The director travels to Taiwan, India, Sri Lanka and the Philippines — four Asian countries with comparable colonial histories — and has sixteen women poets read their own work to camera.

They differ in ethnicity, occupation and standing: Indigenous poets, pioneers of the women's movement, a model, a professor from a lower caste in India. The camera is never turned on a man; the director deliberately hands the right to speak back to women entirely.
