The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful
Written and directed by Yang Ya-che and starring Kara Wai, Wu Ke-xi and Vicky Chen, The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful is a crime thriller about politics, power and family. Centred on three generations of women in the Tang family of southern Taiwan, it follows Madame Tang as she moves with great social skill among politicians and businessmen. After a massacre at a prominent household, the family is drawn into vast financial interests and political manoeuvring, and the three women, each protecting what she values most, scheme against one another and move steadily towards a fate that cannot be undone.
Through layered suspense the film draws human nature, greed, power and family feeling in fine detail, reflecting the political ecology and class structure of Taiwanese society. It won Best Narrative Feature at the 54th Golden Horse Awards in 2017, with Kara Wai named Best Leading Actress and Vicky Chen Best Supporting Actress, making it one of the most significant Taiwanese films of recent years.
